I can hardly believe it’s time for school shopping again, but here we are at the mall. Years ago we decided to set a budget and allow the kids to choose their school clothes, etc. within it. It’s life changing! This does not mean they’re allowed to wear whatever they want.
It does mean, however, that if they spent a bunch on jeans they might end up using last year’s backpack or if they want expensive tennis shoes they might only have enough left for a couple of T-shirts from a secondhand store. No matter what they decide, it has always impressed me to see how careful they are when they have the responsibility and freedom to make their own choices inside of loving limits.
We say, “you’re welcome to use your own money for anything beyond this amount but this is what dad and I can afford to give you this year.”
Another huge bonus is missing the tummy ache I used to get when they would show me price tags. These days, I just smile and realize all the important lessons they’re learning in this process.
Phil 4:11 “… I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”
